You will hear all sorts of people, commentators, and the like, including President Biden, state, “We will follow the science” (focusonthefamily.com). The question is, “Do we?” I want to look at two cases where people don’t always follow the science and then look at the issues this involves. But first. . .
WHAT IS SCIENCE?
The Oxford English Dictionary defines science as ‘the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.’
It is a search for knowledge through observation and experiment. Notice those last two words, “observation and experiment.” Particularly the concept of observation. In other words, observing is a way to understand reality. With that in mind, let’s look at two case studies.
The U.S. Supreme Court is due to render a judgment regarding abortion in an era when we have two sides – Pro-choice and Pro-life. Now, do people follow the science in regard to abortion and pro-choice? I think not.
Some states, including Mississippi, limit abortion after 15 weeks. Charlotte Lozier’s Institute has compiled a fact sheet showing the amazing development that babies in the womb have already experienced at just 15 weeks (lozierinstitute.org).
Science is never quite final. There are always more things to observe and discover. Since abortion was legalized in 1973 in the United States, science has come a long way. As such, they have shown through ultrasounds, etc., just how much a baby is an actual live human being just getting ready to be born. If you follow the science, how can anyone say it is anything other than a person?
Life begins at the moment of conception. The pro-life position is supported by scientific evidence. So, if you follow the science, there is only one conclusion. Abortion is murder and the only position one should take is a Pro-life position.
It is interesting to see how the science here has changed for people. In the old way of thinking, the message was “born this way.” There was even a song about this by Lady Gaga (genius.com). The idea was that gays were born that way.
The concept now is that sexuality is fluid and there are no longer just two genders, male and female. You are not necessarily born that way. Most people reject this thinking and stick with the biological reality that you are born as male or female.
The result of all this has led to the issue of women’s sports. Trans woman athletes hold a competitive edge over biological women.
“Joanna Harper, a transgender competitive runner and medical physicist at Britain’s Loughborough University, told WebMD in a July 2021 interview that there’s ‘absolutely no question’ that trans women will maintain strength advantages over cisgender women, or non-transgender women, even after testosterone suppression. ‘That’s based on my clinical experience, rather than published data, but I would say there’s zero doubt in my mind,’ she said at the time'” (foxnews.com).
“As Dr. Paul McHugh, the university distinguished service professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says, the notion that a person can change his or her sex is ‘starkly, nakedly false.’ He continues: Transgendered men do not become women, nor do transgendered women become men. All (including Bruce Jenner) become feminized men or masculinized women, counterfeits or impersonators of the sex with which they ‘identify.’ In that lies their problematic future” (thefederalist.com).
It is a reality. A man can’t become a woman. He can’t have monthly periods. He can’t give birth to a baby. He can’t nurse a baby. He is a man no matter how much surgery or medication he receives.
A Christian worldview is that God made two sexes, male and female and that biologically one can’t really change. So, the move today to endorse transgender people is contrary to the science of biology and reality.
WHY DO PEOPLE SAY, “FOLLOW THE SCIENCE,” BUT DON’T DO IT?
There are many reasons why people say they follow the science but don’t.
Politics – People are often bound by political pressure to embrace a particular idealogy. This is all tied up with the mistaken concept of equality. President Joe Biden, in the State of the Union Address, stated, “As I said last year, especially to our younger transgender Americans, I will always have your back as your President, so you can be yourself and reach your God-given potential.” (npr.org). He did not say exactly what that involved, but it probably included allowing transgender men full access to women’s facilities and to be involved in women’s sports, in spite of the science of biology that speaks of just two sexes.
Money – Whether we like it or not, many issues are clouded because they involve money. Abortion is not just a moral issue but is also a financial one. The abortion industry is a major economic enterprise involving the livelihood and profits of many people.
Pride – This may sound strange to start with, but when people state issues in a way that declares they are final and cannot be challenged, there is often some form of pride involved. Pride declares we know it all and we believe we deserve the final word on the subject.
Religion – Some would argue that many of these develop what is almost the equivalent of a religion, particularly in the case of climate change. Science has, for some, become a substitute for God almighty.
EXAMPLES OF THE LIMITS OF SCIENCE
COVID 19 – If we needed an example of the limits of science in today’s world, we have it with Covid-19. When the virus hit the world in 2020, we were told to “wash your hands” (twice while you sing happy birthday). However, they discovered it was an air-born disease, and you never heard much about hand washing again. Instead, you were to wear masks, and then it was a question as to whether they worked or not. Some wanted us all to wear masks, others didn’t, and so on. It illustrates the simple fact that the whole time they were still on a journey of discovery regarding Covid-19.
Scientific Mistakes – We should note that the application of science does not always turn out correctly.
“According to a shocking new expose in The New York Times, an investigation of companies manufacturing and promoting prenatal tests for rare and serious conditions has concluded that certain prenatal tests, tests which lead to countless abortions, are ‘usually wrong.’ Up to a third of expectant mothers in the United States will face this scenario, claimed the article, which featured stories of mothers who received positive test results for debilitating chromosomal conditions. Many of these mothers considered abortion until they discovered through more invasive follow-up tests that the initial screening results were false” (breakpoint.org).
We are living in a world today that is full of bad ideas and does not measure up with reality. Science generally has it right, but people who say they ‘follow the science’ do not always act accordingly. We must do what I Thessalonians 5:21 says and “test all things.” To do that, we need to have a strong belief in a Christian worldview that stands upon the Word of God. Science is never a substitute for God but a servant of mankind to help him fulfill his God-given purpose to be here on earth.
It is God who created the world and human beings (babies), and it is God who created both men and women according to His divine plan and purposes. One day, when Jesus returns, all will be put right again. Until then, let us seek truth in the areas of life, for when we know the truth, the truth will set us free (John 8:32).
