There is a precedent in Scripture regarding President Trump’s impeachment inquiry. I was listening to the various commentators give their observations on the impeachment investigation when a simple thought was downloaded into my mind. It was this. The opposition to Trump is following a biblical pattern. This has happened before. It is right there in Scripture. But before I tell you what it is, let’s look at some background information regarding President Trump.

Trump has long-time been a celebrity, first as a flamboyant businessman, and more recently as a TV celebrity with his TV show ‘The Apprentice,’ but in 2016, he did the unthinkable. He decided to run for President. No one, including myself, thought he had any chance of winning. Then to the surprise, even the horror of many people, he eventually won the election and became the President of the United States. Was everybody happy with this result? No! That’s when the opposition arose.

The opposition to President Trump began even before he was inaugurated. Newt Gingrich, the one time speaker of the House of Representatives, summed it up in an article entitled ‘The Plot Against the President is Real.’

“Since the day Trump was elected President, Democrats have been formulating and executing the plot we have been watching unfold. After Trump won a massive electoral majority, Democrats started digging.

“They have been determined to find something – anything – they can use to attack him. The central focus of all of this is to describe and define Trump as a corrupt president, so often that people begin to accept the narrative. It’s not only the elected Democrats. Much of the intelligence community has been equally determined to “uncover” something on President Trump from the beginning.

“In my judgment, the liberal national news media is mindlessly repeating this narrative. Many in the media are implicitly biased against President Trump – but even those who are not are helping the Democrats by giving their message airtime, print real estate and attention.

“We have seen this pattern with the so-called Trump Towers in Moscow scandal, the Robert Mueller investigation, and now the Pelosi-Adam Schiff impeachment effort. Make no mistake: This is not politics as usual. It’s a concerted effort by one political party, the Washington bureaucracy, and the media to overrule the American people” (Fox News 12/1/19).

There are four groups of people who are at the heart of the opposition to Trump:

  1. Left-wing politicians, especially Adam Schiff
  2. The media and television, especially CNN and MSNBC
  3. Newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times and the Washington Post
  4. Organizations and individuals who oppose his policies

Running through them all, and fueled by the media frenzy, has been the call to impeach President Trump and thus remove him from the White House. The pattern for impeachment has a scriptural basis.

Trump is being opposed for three things:

  1. Who he is
  2. What he says
  3. What he does

The ‘left’ has been determined right from the start to destroy President Trump because they never considered him to be a legitimate president of the United States. They have never accepted the results of the 2016 election. Some actually call him ‘an imposter.’

Consequently, they began to look for a reason to impeach President Trump. It started with accusations about the Russians helping him in the election, and that lead in turn to the Mueller investigation (which proved that this was not so). So, they have kept looking and then came up with matters relating to Ukraine. Newt Gingrich has pointed out it was “never about finding the truth. It was always about subverting the will of the people”(Fox News, 12/1/19). The end result is a move to impeach Trump, get him out of office, and destroy him.

Is there a Biblical precedent for opposition? Yes, a similar pattern of opposition occurred in Scripture. The Pharisees and the Elders wanted to get rid of Jesus and, like President Trump, he was opposed for three things:

  1. Who He said He was
  2. What He said
  3. What He did

It is recorded in Scripture how they sort to destroy Jesus. For example, in Matthew 12:14, it states, “And the Pharisees went out and plotted against him that they might destroy him.” See also John 11:53, Matthew 27:5, Luke 5:53-54. They eventually put him on trial (impeachment) and sought to destroy Him.

A similar pattern occurred with Paul. Acts 23:12-15 states that people plotted to kill Paul for what he supposedly had done and for what he had said.

Am I comparing President Trump to Jesus? Absolutely not! Absolutely not! No one compares to Jesus! Trump is not a Messiah and never will be! It is not Jesus and President Trump that are similar. Instead, it is the pattern of opposition and the plan of attack that is similar.

What is going on in our nation today is more than just a difference of opinion between the ‘right’ and the ‘left’; it is a spiritual battle! Steven Strang, the founder of Charisma magazine, has written this, “Many Christians see the current division in our country as a sign of spiritual warfare. . . . This explains why charismatics and even many evangelical Christians see what is going on in our country and in Trump’s presidency as a spiritual battle. Even some mainline Protestants who usually avoid acknowledging such things as demonic spirits admit that the vitriol has gotten so extreme in America that maybe there is spiritual warfare behind it” (

So what are we to do?

Well, to start with, pray!

Take hold of the words of Paul in Ephesians chapter 6:10-18, where he gives instruction on spiritual warfare, including the need to put on the whole armor of God and finally “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit.”

What America needs now is prayer, earnest faith-filled, Spirit-anointed prayer, and intercession!

Church. . . . It is time to pray!

I realize that not everyone will see the situation of the impeachment inquiry as I do. However, I want to make it clear I have not dealt with whether Trump’s actions were right or wrong. Or whether he deserves to be impeached. Rather, I am merely pointing out a pattern in the investigation. I welcome your responses.
