I suspect that years ago, most people did not know anything about people being transgender. But today, this has changed, as we continually see this issue in the media and the press. This is confusing because ‘common sense’ declares there are only two sexes – male and female. They reject the idea of sexual fluidity, the idea that there is a variety of sexual identities that are not dependent upon one’s birth. However, it is not as simple as it seems, as there are a number of issues behind the concept of ‘transgender.’
A DENIAL OF REALITY
For most people, the concept of transgender is confusing not only to common sense but also in regard to biology. The belief is that you are either male or female at birth, and nothing can really change that.
Consequently, we know that a man cannot become a woman, he can’t give birth to a baby, he can’t breastfeed one, and he can’t have a menstrual cycle. Likewise, a woman cannot become a man.
Isn’t it strange that for many years, those promoting homosexuality would declare it was determined at birth and can’t change? So, they oppose counseling homosexuals to change. Nevertheless, they now declare that a person can change.
Think about this for a moment. If a person can change their sexual identity, why not allow a person to change their racial identity? i.e., a white man can choose to identify as an African American, an Asian, or whatever.
“Last month, an article published on NBC described “[p]ractitioners of ‘race change to another,’ or RCTA,” which refers to people who “purport to be able to manifest physical changes in their appearance and even their genetics to truly become a different race.” Interviewed for the article were teenagers who are enamored with Japanese and Korean cultures and who have become convinced that, by listening to subliminal messages while they sleep, they will eventually wake up with Asian characteristics, such as eyes with an epicanthic fold” (www.breakpoint.org).
So, what do you want to be? If it is just a choice, you can be anything you think you are. Absurd? Yes!
POLITICS AND IDEOLOGY
Unfortunately, transgenderism has become a political ideology that becomes a bedrock plank in political platforms. Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign recently stated, “Wokeness is a new secular religion that says your identity is based on race and sexuality. This is destroying America in front of our eyes.”
The result is gender confusion as people have sought to make transgenderism a normal part of society and life. It is not. It is a distortion, and only time will show its effect on this generation. Fortunately, there are some signs of change taking place in Europe. Take, for example, what is happening in Britain.
“A recent article in The Atlantic by Helen Lewis made the bold claim that “The Gender War Is Over in Britain.” An overstatement, to be sure, but not entirely unwarranted. Keir Starmer, head of the Labour Party, recently led his party away from full support of radical gender ideology. This was a notable shift for the United Kingdom’s largest left-wing party, which had previously encouraged radical elements of trans activism and stood aside as feminists were canceled for resisting the new orthodoxy. The shift, which was quietly announced to the public, made “three big declarations.”
One was that “sex and gender are different.” Another was that, although Labour continues to believe in the right to change one’s legal gender, safeguards are needed to “protect women and girls from predators who might abuse the system.” Finally, Labour was therefore dropping its commitment to self-ID—the idea that a simple online declaration is enough to change someone’s legal gender for all purposes—and would retain the current requirement of a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria” (www.breakpoint.org).
MONEY
It is probably not apparent to most people that money is a significant factor in the expansion of transgenderism. There is a lot of money in this medical practice, not only the money involved in the initial treatment such as operations and the alteration of men’s genital and women’s breasts, but people do not always recognize that this puts people on a lifetime need of medical attention and use of pharmaceutical drugs.
I must confess that I have always thought of the medical field, especially doctors, as being committed to alleviating disease and suffering. Still, I have now realized that there are areas of personal gain for some people or companies, such as pharmaceuticals, in the medical field (some, not all).
When money is involved, the temptation is to ignore issues and settle for what one can gain from it all. This is the case with transgenderism and is another example of when the Bible says, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” (I Timothy 6:10)
ANTI-BIBLICAL
For the Christian, the teaching that begins back in Genesis that God created us ‘male and female’ is the foundation of discovering how God made us and who we are. As such, transgender seeks to destroy our Christian beliefs. “‘Wokeness is a secular religion. It isn’t a religion based on God. It isn’t a religion that offers a path to redemption, but it is a secular religion nonetheless,’ Ramaswamy, author of Woke, Inc. told CBN News” (www2.cbn.com). This secular religion is totally against biblical teaching as it does not recognize God as our creator.
Actually, in line with this, we have to recognize that it is a spiritual issue. The devil would like us to destroy the place of the Bible in our society, devoiding it of all things Christian today. So, ‘we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against precipalities and powers.’ (Ephesians 5:12)
THE CHRISTIAN RESPONSE
Well-known Christian author Michael Brown has urged Christians to resist the transgender agenda and reach out compassionately to people. In an article in Decision Magazine, he shares a story of such a need.
“A pastor’s wife calls my radio show, facing a difficult, first-time situation. A faithful brother in the congregation just shared with the pastor that he was actually born a woman and had sex-change surgery years ago, supplemented since then by hormones.
The church only knew this person as Richard, but now “Richard” was feeling convicted, realizing that he was really she. What counsel should the church give? Did the Bible have anything to say?
In the days ahead, we will be facing more and more situations just like this, right in our congregations and homes. And in each situation, we will be meeting real people, all of them created in the image of God and loved by Him, people for whom Jesus died.
It is essential that we have hearts of compassion, listening, seeking to understand, demonstrating genuine love and concern—along with backbones of steel, refusing to water down God’s holy standards, knowing that His ways are the ways of life” (www.decisionmagazine.com).
CLOSING THOUGHT
The Christian and the Church have to hold two things together: truth and love. See Ephesians 4:15. We need both. The truth is that there are two genders that are biologically observable: male and female. Dr. Paul McHugh, the University distinguished service professor of psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, explains: Transgendered men do not become women, nor do transgendered women become men. All (including Bruce Jenner) become feminized men or masculinized women, counterfeits or impersonators of the sex with which they ‘identify.’ In that lies their problematic future” (www.heritage.org).
But we also need love. Let us act in love towards those who are caught up in transgenderism and pray that they will discover the truth. Remember, Genesis tells us that God created us, male and female.
